The aim of this project is to produce a design code for a future development in West Oxford. The design codes will enable Oxford City Council to bring urban renewal to the area through high standards of design. The proposal will ensure housing developments achieve high levels of environmental efficiency, and buildings and open spaces are encouraged to be ‘flexibly’ designed to allow for changes in lifestyles, family composition and uses. Using an urban design framework and master plan for the area produced by an MA student, a design codes document and an improved design of 2 blocks will be created.

The project will include:

  • An introduction of the area – information about the area and surrounding area in which the site lies

  • A critique of the urban design framework (master plan) – this will include a SWOT analysis of the masterplan which outlines the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats

  • Design codes – the aim of this document is to be a key tool used in the planning system to guide the end designer of the scheme

  • A final revised design and regulating plan – the aim is to test the application of the design codes created

  • A reflective conclusion – reflection on what has been produced in the design code document and a reflection of my learning experience.

“Well designed neighbourhoods inspire the people who live in them, whilst poorly designed cities brutalise their citizens.” - Jan Gehl
